Throughout history the Italian Navy has been regarded as one of the most respected naval military corps in the world. Awarded numerous honors over the years, the Navy continues to be a model of Italian excellence within the international military scene nowadays. The connection with the Italian Navy goes back to the 80s when Squale was awarded a contract to become the official watch supplier to the La Spezia Scuba Diving Group. For this purpose, special Squale watches were designed and crafted according to the specific requests of the Navy itself.

40 years after that notable collaboration, the Navy and Squale have decided to renew this professional partnership, producing a watch in a limited edition of only 300 pieces, once again made in collaboration with the Navy in every detail, in order to obtain an extremely reliable and high-performance watch. For this distinguished collaboration, it was decided to revive the historic Squale “Master” caseback. This model was one of the first casebacks designed by Charles Von Büren in the 60s.

Over time, the Squale Master became an established name in the world of diving enthusiasts, as famous freedivers such as Enzo Maiorca and Jacques Mayol chose it as their reliable companion during their underwater adventures. The technical characteristics of this pioneering watch guaranteed water resistance up to a depth of 1000 meters, an outstanding feature by the standards of the time. With the aim of creating an even higher performance product for the renewed collaboration with the Italian Navy, the Master caseback has undergone some technical improvements (such as the introduction of the helium valve and the addition of an XX millimeter-thick sapphire crystal) to withstand depths of up to 1200 meters. The Drass Galeazzi company (world leader in the production of submarines) carried out the caseback water resistant tests in their laboratories and certified the resistance up to 120 ATM. All the features of the watch have been designed to create an incredibly high-performance watch, able to meet the needs and high standards of the Italian Navy The dial was made with the “sandwich” technique, which allows a greater amount of SuperLuminova BWG9 to be concentrated in the large indexes, thus ensuring maximum brightness and legibility even in extreme conditions.

The “bund” bezel is another unique feature of the Squale Master X Marina Militare; without a tachymeter scale – and with only one triangle in SuperLuminova – it was intended exclusively for use by the military diving corp, as it was born out of the need to monitor the hours spent on very long dives, and not the minutes as in traditional underwater-use bezels.

The caseback bears the Italian Navy coat of arms, depicting the four Maritime Republics, as well as the edition number of the limited series.

HISTORY

The great Swiss tradition of precision watchmaking, combined with a love of the sea and diving, were the two factors that led C. Von Büren to work exclusively on the construction of professional divers watches from the early ’50s. Initially, the “Squale” mark appeared on the cases of Swiss watches of various makes, as a sign of fine production and a quality symbol. Then, in the ’60s, Von Büren started to produce watches that also had the Squale mark on their dials, starting the brand?s institutional and commercial history. The first sporting successes, such as the world diving title won in Cuba in ’68, were linked to the names of products that had become as legendary as the medium, Master 50 atm. The ’70s saw the birth of the first “1000 meter” watch with glass on flexible mounting and snap-on lunette which could be turned in both directions. Squale continued to produce for other brands and started to supply the elite corps of a large number of armed forces, including the parachutists of Italy’s Folgore Brigade and the Italian Navy’s Diving Corps. All this has made Squale synonymous with quality and the benchmark brand for divers’ watches internationally, a status it has enjoyed for several decades.

HOW THE PRODUCT IS BUILT

The great Swiss tradition of precision watchmaking, combined with solidity and durability: as tradition demands, the case is made throughout from Swiss 316L steel. The components are all Swiss, too: winders, winder sleeves, and gaskets. These are essential parts of a watch that has to withstand high pressures and salt water. Watches are painstakingly assembled by master watchmakers, taking the greatest care over the fitting of the gaskets and ensuring that the case is airtight; this then undergoes strict checks, with regard to both resistance to water and timekeeping accuracy. Quality tests are performed on every single watch and not on a sampling basis. Last but not least, the movement’s reliability is certified by the fact that Squale has always been a direct customer of the ETA Factory at Grenchen, guaranteeing that all movements are of prime quality.
