Off the Grid With the Søværn Kulsort: A Field Watch for the Wild

This summer we took the Nordic Marine Instruments Søværn Kulsort field watch for a few days into the wild Taiga of northern Europe. After many months of designing new watch straps, working in more microbrands into our store, a small vacation into places that just slow everything down was badly needed.

Stepping off the path, the noise fades, and before long it’s just you, a pack on your shoulders, hearing only the wind and the steady rhythm of your mechanical watch. Let’s rewind how it held up when it’s actually used the way it was meant to be.

No Screens (Almost). No Buzz. Just Essentials.

Nordic Marine Instruments Søværn, a field watch in its natural habitat

We took nothing fancy with us, just the essentials: hoodie, rain jacket, sturdy boots, and the Søværn Kulsort strapped to the wrist. Of course we needed an iPhone to take pictures, but at least we could leave the computer screens behind in the office. During this rainy summer, we and the watch got wet, of course. A light drizzle, a bit more heavy rain, and even a refreshing bath in the cold lake water. But that’s part of it. If your gear can’t handle the real world, it’s not gear, it’s decoration.

With 100 meters of water resistance, the Søværn takes a cold lake dip without any problems

The Nordic Marine Instruments Søværn settled in like it had always been part of the landscape. It took a full plunge in the ice-cold lake without flinching, then dried off on a bed of moss, catching patches of sunlight on a smooth rock. It looked completely at home, just a solid, capable companion that fit into the forest like bark on a tree.

Why a Field Watch Still Matters

Even without a phone signal or a packed schedule, keeping time still counts. It helps you pace yourself on a hike, judge how much daylight you’ve got left, or keep track of breaks without falling behind. A good field watch is must be able to tell more than just time, it needs to be a reliable tool on your explorations.

We also used it as a compass once, just for fun. Point the hour hand at the sun, split the angle between the hour hand and 12 o’clock, and you’ve got south. It’s a cool trick, and honestly, the kind of thing that makes you feel more tuned in to where you are.

Glows When You Need It

At night, when the fire’s down to ashes and you’re tucked into your sleeping bag, the Kulsort’s lume stays quietly visible. The strong Superluminova BGW9 helps you to catch the time during the cold night. No button pressing, no glowing screen. Just lume, doing what lume does.

The Søværn Kulsort is Built For This

The Nordic Marine Instruments Søværn Kulsort is one of those watches that doesn’t need explaining when you’re out in the woods. It just fits. You can wear it in the city, sure, but it breathes easier under open skies. If you’ve been meaning to get outside and leave your notifications behind for a bit, maybe this is your sign. Throw on your Kulsort, grab your gear, and head where the trees are taller than the buildings. It’s ready when you are.
