What is a Nylon Single-Piece Strap?
Nylon straps are popular watch straps made of durable nylon, traditionally used in men’s watches. These straps feature basic buckles and often come with striped designs to enhance their appeal.
The Common Misconception About Nylon Straps
Many people around the world mistakenly believe that Nylon watch straps are associated with the actual North Atlantic Treaty Organization, because of the shared nick-name. However, this is not true. These straps are not issued by the defense organization and have no relation to it.
The History of Single-Piece Straps
Nylon straps began to be issued by the British Ministry of Defence in the 1960s to its soldiers. These nylon straps, initially known as “Single Piece Nylon straps,” were an essential part of soldiers’ uniforms. The military chose nylon for its rough and tough qualities, lightweight nature, and ease of removal compared to conventional materials like leather. The hardware was originally made of chrome-plated brass. The first military-grade straps were 20 mm wide and issued in Admiralty Grey. They were called Single Piece Nylon straps because of the name of the form used to request the strap and related items from the MOD’s inventory.
The original specifications have been updated over time. The official width is now 18 mm, though both 18 mm and 20 mm straps are issued by the Ministry of Defence. Additionally, the fittings are now made of stainless steel. Eventually, these straps were referred to as “Nylon” straps due to each strap being uniquely identifiable by a stock number.
The Colourful World of Single-Piece Nylon Straps
Initially meant for British soldiers, Nylon straps soon attracted civilian interest. As military surplus stores began to stock these straps, their popularity surged. The James Bond movies significantly boosted the fame of Nylon straps, with Sean Connery wearing them in several films. By the end of the Cold War, these straps had become a staple in military surplus stores. Manufacturers saw an opportunity to recreate these military straps for the public, giving rise to a new industry. Today, Nylon straps are available in a variety of bright colors and combinations. Their durability, comfort, style, and dirt-repellent qualities have ensured their continued popularity for decades.
