When avid motorcyclist, veteran watch journalist, and Beyond The Dial Co-Founder, Allen Farmelo, began pairing watches with his motorcycles and posting images on Instagram, Alsta’s CEO Angus MacFadyen reached out. A week later, the Motoscaphe was in the works. Farmelo says that he has had “about 30 years to dream up this watch, because I’ve literally been thinking about the perfect motorcycle watch for about that long.”

Motorcycle watches have almost always been cheap, flimsy things with a brand logo thoughtlessly slapped on the dial. The Alsta Motoscaphe carries no specific motorcycle branding, is built to the highest mechanical standards, and will reliably serve its owner and their heirs for generations to come.

Also setting the Alsta Motoscaphe apart is a unique feature set aimed at motorcyclists of all kinds, including a left-handed crown to eliminate digging into a bent wrist, a useful 12-hour GMT rotating bezel, ultra-clear legibility with anti-reflective coating, and an aesthetic that’s equally at home on a Harley bagger, a Ducati Panigale, a bobbed cafe racer, or a muddy adventure bike like the BMW GS.

Alsta – A Classic Watch Brand Reborn

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Alsta made beautifully-engineered wristwatches for stylish men and women of intellectual and creative substance. People who required precision and robustness; scientists, engineers, and industrialists as well as style-setters and the self-made. It succumbed in the late 1970s, along with many independent watchmakers, to the “quartz crisis”. Hundreds of watch manufacturers went out of business as the world feared the end for mechanical watches. Sadly, before this vision was seen to be unfounded, many respected names, including Alsta, disappeared.

Alsta was resurrected in 2014 and after two years in the making, our first wristwatch for over 40 years was released in 2017. Alsta was inspired by the Nautoscaph dive watch as worn by Richard Dreyfuss as Matt Hooper in the classic movie, Jaws and we chose the Nautoscaph II to revive and lead the resurrection of Alsta in the 21st Century. Alsta is thrilled that the Nautoscaph II has been so well received by Alsta enthusiasts and by new discoverers of the brand.

In 2018, Alsta presented to you the next two timepieces; the Nautoscaph III and the Surf n Ski which were equally well received.

Now, in 2019, Alsta is thrilled to present the watch that Alsta enthusiasts have been asking for since day one; the Nautoscaph Superautomatic. This is the 21st-century iteration of the classic which Matt Hooper chose as his dive companion.
